Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A recent initialism came to light a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. A contest that once promoted harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
