British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
