The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
