New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
