A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
