Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

Recently the US president stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House did not share further information on why the talks had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week the American president supported a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to halt the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky said talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he commented.
