The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
