UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
