Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the option to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
